Lower Decatur Street communities on the internet.

People are always saying to me, “Joe, where do we find other Lower Decatur Street communities on the internet?”. Well, there are a few interesting places to look my friends.

LiveJournal

http://community.livejournal.com/lowerdecatur/

LiveJournal.com hosts this lively online communty that also discusses life around the neighborhood. There are up to the minute posts for many events in the area, almost always posted by devoted fans. Here, you’ll find movie listings for Mojo Lounge’s Tuesday Movie Night with Mark. All of the notable events at the Whirling Dervish are announced here as well.

There is also an RSS feed that you can find in the side bar of this site.

Myspace

Not surprisingly you’ll find the neighborhood well represented on this wildy popular social networking site. Here’s who I found.

Lower Decatur Group – A MySpace group for folks in the area to meet, many of the same folks who do the LiveJournal group.

LowerDecatur.com – We have a growing group of friends on MySpace as well.

Many of the neighborhood merchants have their own unique MySpace profiles.

House of Shock field trip with Mojo Lounge

Friday, October 20th Mojo Cafe & Lounge hosts an excursion to the world famous House of Shock. Arrangements are being made to rent a bus at a cost of $10 per person. Please sign-up at the bar and pay as soon as possible so that the correct size bus will be reserved. Everyone will buy their own tickets at the door. There is a $2 off printable coupon.

Meet at the bar at 7pm. Call 524-1998 if you have any questions.

Got WiFi? Lower Decatur Street does.

While putting the together the interactive map for the site it came to my attention that there are a whole bunch of intentionally open wireless access points. I’d be willing to bet that there are more here in these few blocks than any other part of the city. So, somebody has to say it.

“Lower Decatur Street is New Orleans’ WiFi Hotspot!”

Here’s the current list:

  • Cafe Envie – 1241 Decatur Street
  • Coop’s Place – 1109 Decatur Street
  • J.C. Grocery Deli – 65 French Market Place
  • Mojo Lounge & Cafe – 1140 Decatur Street
  • Turtle Bay – 1119 Decatur Street
  • Whirling Dervish – 1135 Decatur Street

Most of the access points listed are usable in neighboring establishments.

Happy Surfing.

UPDATE: Added the Whirling Dervish to the list. Thanks, Cian

UPDATE: Removed Sarafina’s  (This should get moved to a page, instead of being in a post, so it’s always on the sidebar)
